Hope Church, Queen Street Lancaster

YEAR

DBA are currently working alongside Hope Church in Lancaster to remodel and extend their current building stock which is currently no longer fit for purpose. The site is located on Queen Street in the Lancaster Conservation Area (Character Area 11: High Street). Whilst not formally listed, the existing building is classed as a positive building in the Conservation Area and is considered to be a Non-Designated Heritage Asset (NDHA) by Lancaster City Council.
DBA have worked closely with the Conservation Team at Lancaster City Council to prepare proposals which are sympathetic to the NDHA whilst meeting the requirements of the Church. The proposals are for the introduction of an infill extension between the Church and the northern boundary wall to create a brand-new entrance area and multi-use space which provide access into the main worship space as well a further infill extension between the church and existing church centre. The extensions will greatly improve circulation around the building as well as providing additional break out space which at present is very limited. The existing Church Centre will be fully remodelled to form a new kitchen facility, further multi-use spaces, plant room, WC’s and storage.
Presently, there is an approximate 1m level difference between the pavement level and the proposed finished floor level of the new Entrance extension. To improve the accessibility to the building a new entrance ramp and external steps are proposed.
The planning application is currently being considered by Lancaster City Council Planning.
